Violence erupts in Makati demolition

MANILA, Philippines – A cameraman and a still undetermined number of policemen were injured during a violent confrontation with informal settlers in Barangay San Isidro, Makati City before noon Monday.

Members of the Makati City Engineering Division and Meralco arrived at the Guatemala Compound early morning Monday to cut the illegal electric connections and demolish shelters in the compound, which the city government plans to turn into a sports complex.

Angry residents threw rocks and glass bottles at the members of the demolition team who were trying to enter the compound.

Tension between the demolition team and residents eased after the anti-riot police decided to retreat due to continuous throwing of rocks and shards of glass by the informal settlers.

The city government earlier offered a relocation site in Calauan, Laguna for some 265 families living in the 870 square meters of land.

A financial assistance worth P24,000 was also offered to the residents. – with a report from Henry Atuelan, dzMM | | Posted at 09/24/2012 12:56 PM | Updated as of 09/24/2012 6:34 PM
