Jesse Robredo: Gone too soon. The country also grieved the untimely death of Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, who died when the six-seater Piper Seneca plane he was on crashed near the shoreline of Masbate City on August 18. Robredo was on his way back from Cebu to Naga City when the plane, operated by service airline Aviatour, encountered engine trouble. President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III honored Robredo with the highest award that can be bestowed to a Filipino. Robredo’s widow, Leni, meanwhile became a household name and is soon set to conquer politics. He concluded Aviatour used ‘shortcuts’ to obtain a favorable result of Piper Seneca’s flight safety rating without the conduct of an actual test flight. President Aquino also added Aviatour owner and pilot Capt. Jessup Bahinting did not have enough expertise in flying a one-engine plane in an operative emergency.
